This National Careers Week, we look at what the average day in the life of a Quantity Surveyor looks like – and why Lawrence loves his role at BOOT.
What is a Quantity Surveyor?
As Quantity Surveyor, it is my job to ensure every BOOT Construction project is on budget and meets all necessary legal and quality standards.
That starts off with estimating costs for a project at tender stage for both material and labour, as well as the timescales we will complete in.
I’ll then continue to monitor and control those costs as a project progresses and ensure our work provides clients with the highest standard final product at the best value for money.
It’s important to note that this is far from a desk job! I spend a lot of my time out on site and watching our projects come to life thanks to our team.
I also work a lot with our Contracts Manager, Ashley, as well as our clients to ensure they are kept up to date with the latest forecasts for their project.
That’s the best thing about the job – no two days are the same. It all comes down to which projects we are undertaking at the time. That’s especially true given the wide range of projects we take on here at BOOT.
What does it take to become a Quantity Surveyor?
There are lots of skills you need to become a Quantity Surveyor – many of which you will learn during your training.
But deep down, what every good Quantity Surveyor has is effective teamwork and communication skills, and the initiative to overcome problems should they arise.
You’ll learn a lot about how to analyse data in the job – which is something I love. I’ve always had a keen eye for numbers, which made for an easy transition from my previous role at another company.
Our team are experts in their relevant fields and work together to make BOOT the successful contractor it is today. Want to learn more about our team? Click here to meet them.
