Huws Gray

BOOT were contracted through a single stage tender to construct a complex modern sawmill and office facility for local firm Huws Gray at their existing site in Herringswell, near Newmarket.

The team liaised with the client to design and build the 76m x 19m structure to its unique specifications, situated in the heart of an existing live 11-acre active worksite.

Detailed logistical planning was crucial and our site manager remained in daily contact with the Operations Manager for Huws Gray to ensure deliveries and plant movements were carefully scheduled so not to clash with their own operations. The site operated under a strict permit to work system with revised comprehensive emergency plans.

An existing structure on site was removed to make way for the new sawmill. The existing foundations, slabs and push walls were broken out on site and crushed ready for reuse to prevent a high number of vehicle movements – saving the client time, money and disruption while reducing carbon emissions.

Extra challenges were found with the discovery of four existing soakaways within the proposed building footprint, requiring the creation of a new 29m x 9m crate soakaway. A mixture of reinforced deep pad and strip foundations were constructed to counter historic poor ground conditions on site.

The steel frame structure was fully erected, levelled and lined over 12 working days, including the installation of all cold rolled purlins and clad rails. External walls were constructed with a course brick plinth, approximately 1m high, prior to cladding being installed. Large sectional and curtain doors provided access for the flow of goods and multiple side loaders operated across the site.
Careful planning and programming was necessary to negotiate additional workspace so MEWP’s could be used for the fixing of composite panels. BOOT offered flexibility to ensure adjacent buildings were unaffected during this work and implemented traffic management as and when required.

A new 800amp, three-phase supply was installed alongside a significant mains panel board complete with PFC unit, which was required for the large machinery.

The BOOT team were keen to engage with the local community on this project and donated all timber waste to a local Scout group to enhance their outdoor learning offering.
